The creation of “The Super League”

The creation of “The Super League” took many by surprise on Sunday evening, but as always the proof that the project was ready to launch before that date can be found in the trademark registers.

The logo was filed at the EU-level on Friday April 16th under number 018455149 and covers a wide range of products and services: from video game software, clothes and toys to broadcasting and sporting activities. Inclusion of these goods and services is necessary to cover the key business of the league, but it’s clear that part of the trademark application is also defensive. The purpose of a defensive trademark registration is to enlarge the scope of protection to goods and services that are different from key activities to easily block identical or similar trademark registrations and use by third parties. Products such as pizza cutters, flaming torches and pet food are not what one expects to be commercialized by “The Super League”. The application will be examined by the trademark office and afterwards third parties will have the possibility to oppose it based on prior rights. To be continued…
