In 2012, she was appointed head of the patent department at her firm, overseeing a team of approximately 40 people. Later, she took charge of the international patent division, leading a team of over 100 people. In 2017, she co-founded Calysta with Mounir Kadjaj, with the aim of advancing her modern vision of intellectual property, one that is closely aligned with the commercial objectives of businesses and less focused on formalism.

I definitely love to build and to see growth around me. Creating a new IP firm became self-evident. I like identifying new opportunities to increase the value of intellectual property (IP) so much, seeing Calysta's ambassadors growing, to develop tailored solutions. This is a whole where each of us is able to find his/her way to develop his/her talents and contribute to a work environment where our people are committed to exceed the expectations of our clients. This is reflected on how we serve clients. At Calysta, maximizing the value of IP by deeply understanding our client's challenges and business is our duty. We want to build strong but smart assets, i.e. meaningful IP, to leverage your business. Calysta's ambassadors are accountable to deliver what you really need. That is how Calysta is dedicated to grow the trust of our clients. Listening to clients' experience, challenges, concerns and feedback is very rewarding. I consider this as a precious gift allowing me to grow and extend my knowledge and fields of expertise. When it comes to my private life, I have three little boys: Matthias, Gabriel and Tim. They are all full of energy and dynamism. I have the privilege to see them learning, experiencing success and failure, being happy and sometimes sad. I love watching them growing up, even if is happens probably too fast… I grow each day thanks to them and my partner, even if I still have to expand the balance between my private and professional life!

Team spirit: "feeling of pride and loyalty that exists among the members of a team and that makes them want their team to do well or to be the best" (Collins dictionary). Calysta is one single team of professionals dedicated to our clients and working unitedly. This team approach is assuredly key to me at Calysta… I really am of the opinion that a client is well and accurately advised by a team of professionals, i.e. various competencies, skills and experiences, that can meet and exceed his/her expectations. I used to play music for years. Playing music with others was as important to me as music itself. Being a father since a couple of years now, I exchanged this amazing (but time-consuming) hobby with another one: indoor soccer. Totally different… but still a team activity!

Curiosity is, for me, one of the essential elements in a job. Being curious about how things unfold in the company you choose, being curious about what you'll face every day. If a place doesn’t spark that curiosity, then it’s generally not the right place for me. And Calysta strongly evokes that! That’s why I chose to work there.

"I joined Calysta to get a glimpse of what future technologies will look like, and to interact with passionate innovators! Innovation is at the heart of Calysta’s business. Every patent has to be new, and our customers come to Calysta because of a new invention. Innovation is difficult to achieve, as it sometimes takes many iterations to get conclusive results. That’s why I want to help young companies protect their hard work and ensure that it can be valorized by future investors. For more mature companies, it can be easy to miss out on innovation. I want to focus on the innovation aspects for customers who have already reached a certain degree of maturity, so that they can continue to protect their innovation. But we also need to think about the evolution of their field to ensure that they are not blocked by a competitor and can continue to bring value. So, whatever the customer, innovation remains a key element in the discussion. My career path has always been guided by innovation, as I always worked in an R&D environment (medical devices and board design) before joining Calysta I’m always happy to be surprised by innovative ideas, no matter how simple they may seem. For me, knowledge is a cumulative process, and there is no such things as a ""simple"" invention."

"One of the reasons why I decided to join Calysta is the supporting and understanding atmosphere, which immediately resonated with me. I believe that empathy is essential in the workplace. It goes beyond understanding the clients' needs and requires the ability to actively put oneself in their shoes and see things from their perspective. In an empathetic environment, people feel more comfortable sharing their ideas and expressing themselves openly, which ultimately boosts productivity and efficiency! The great thing about empathy is that it has the potential to improve any relationship, be it with clients, coworkers, family members, friends and even with strangers."

A way a describing holistic is that the whole is more than the sum of its parts. I believe this is the case for Calysta, because the synergy between everybody at the company contributes to an amazing team. At Calysta, everybody works together and interacts, regardless of your role in the company. In addition, Calysta is able to offer clients a holistic approach because all intellectual property specialties are covered. This played an important role in my choice to work at Calysta, since it results in a very pleasant work environment where I can also learn a lot from the rest. I believe that my role goes much further than just drafting and prosecuting patents. I like to really get to know the client, such that I can provide a holistic strategy. The optimal strategy extends far beyond the mere decision of filing a patent application. Firstly, the technology which is claimed in the patent should align with the strategic objectives of the client. Important aspects in this assessment are the (future) product portfolio of the client and his competitors, the long-term plans of the client, and what the client wants to achieve with the patent. Secondly, there are many strategic decisions during the patent prosecution and enforcement, e.g. relating to which countries are important, which claims are most relevant, which arguments can we make and which could entail risks, is a fast grant preferred or is it better to have the application pending and keep the competitors in the dark,… All of these decisions should be part of a holistic approach. It is important to keep an overview of the entire situation and be well aware of how one decision affects other aspects of the strategy. In addition, this often goes further than only the patent strategy, which is why our different specialists (patents, trademarks, design, contracts, business specialists) work closely together to offer a holistic strategy across the entire board. I also approach my personal life in a similar way. For me, there is no clear distinction between different parts of my life, because everything affects each other. I try to have a strategy for my life, which is holistic. Thus, when making important decisions, I consider what it would change for the various aspects of my life. The holistic approach also manifests in other ways. For example, I think that new experience help you to grow and learn, from which you can gain benefits in other aspects of your life. In a similar way, studying new topics helps as well. Therefore, I am always looking for new things to experience or learn. As another example, I believe that my physical health and mental wellness are connected, so I try to live a healthy lifestyle.

I decided to join Calysta, because each person who is part of this project is different, but has an deep respect for others, which is allowing our team to learn and grow together. The move to a hyper-dynamic company such as Calysta is a challenge. This necessitates a sense of adaptation; all that has been established before is no longer certain. There is a need to achieve the tasks in a more efficient way; to find new solutions, to deliver on time and "to the point". At Calysta, there is no routine, and I appreciate this. The creation of a patent portfolio for our clients is necessarily challenging: as for Humans, every patent is different. Where is the counter-intuitive idea that is at the base of the client's innovation? Where is the hidden gem? How can I create a case on that basis? How can I defend this before the different jurisdictions? On the other hand, third parties' patents represent challenges to our clients. It is also a big challenge to give the right black/white (I should say black/orange) advice to our clients in a concise way. Our clients need to take the good decisions, and it is our challenge to correctly inform them using concise and readily understandable terms. I have a lot of different activities in my life, beside Calysta, of course. It is a challenge to combine them: when you drive, you see the patents you are drafting; when you sleep, you dream about the claims. It is thus a challenge to avoid traffic accidents and to sleep correctly. To say it differently, without the stimulation offered by these many challenges, my enthusiasm and dynamisms would be declining.

I joined CALYSTA because TRANSPARENCY represents a key element to me. Calysta's flat structure embodies that value, just like the way we communicate on decisions and changes within our company. To me, TRANSPARENCY is essential concerning the services we perform, our methods and most importantly our prices. I believe full TRANSPARENCY on those essential criteria will only reinforce our relationship with our clients and their level of satisfaction with our work. TRANSPARENCY means also a lot to me in private life. Giving and receiving honest feedback, being able to be transparent to the people close to you, is a strong pillar of my personality.

Pragmatism encourages dynamism, and these are 2 characteristics undeniably present in Calysta's DNA. Working for Calysta means collaborating with dynamic people looking for concrete and pragmatic solutions, on whatever the topic. Our society and more particularly the working world have become so complex that it is essential to be able to provide our clients with pragmatic solutions, meeting their needs and various constraints, without making their task more complicated. I decided to join Calysta because I could sense from the beginning that they value loyalty, for example in the way the company works and is organized. It is at the center of their relationship with their clients as well as the relationship between colleagues. Loyalty towards clients means respecting the commitments you made to them and it is precisely what Calysta does for each of its clients. For me, loyalty is the fundamental value in any relationship. You always have to commit to what you promised in order to develop and maintain a strong and healthy relation with other people.

One of the main reasons why I decided to join CALYSTA is the open-minded approach. Everyone is allowed to share their thoughts and ideas, which allows us to find the best possible solutions for all the challenges and opportunities that may arise. We want to make sure we have an open-minded relationship with our clients in order to have them feel that we are thinking together on how to manage, visualize and protect their IP Portfolio. Being open-minded is something which has always been very important to me. Trying to understand the vision of other people, and more importantly why they see it that way, helps me a lot to make the right decisions or search for the right solutions.

The "client" is put at the center of all activities of Calysta. Calysta does not provide standardized IP services, but tailors them to each "client". We believe that you cannot provide a proper advice without having fully understood the product, service and challenges of the business strategy of a "client". Since I started to work as a patent attorney, it has always been my ambition to thoroughly protect the business of the client, but only as far as economically justified by its business. This approach absolutely necessitates a first step to focus on the "client", to listen and to keep track of his business. In a second step, the best protection and advice can then be tailor-made based on a comprehensive set of tools, including IP rights like patents, trademark, design, utility models, copyright, database rights and trade secrets. But this set also includes further legal measures from unfair competition law, contract law, labor law, tax law, as well as non-legal measures like internal policies, task management, etc. The "client" of my private life is my family which I put in the center of my free time. I love my work with "clients" as I love to spend my time with my family.

Calysta has chosen to use a Greek first name of a person with a reference to every advisor's ultimate goal: to delivery the most beautiful result. The smell of creativity within the young team of experienced professionals made me choose to join Calysta. With my creativity I hope to be able to help the name becoming a brand, also in sectors where entrepreneurs did not yet have the chance to meet Calysta. I am glad to see that the same creativity can help the team to grow further on. Creativity is needed to choose a distinctive name that stands out from existing players in the market. Creativity is also needed to ensure that the name continues to have meaning over time and can even become a brand. With my experience and knowledge I have shown that I am creative in coming up with the best possible solutions for customers. Creativity is also needed to clearly explain what customers need, because understanding helps when rolling out a strategy. Creativity also helps you stay flexible in ever-changing markets and be prepared for upcoming challenges. Everybody has talents. I am even convinced that we all can achieve things, as long as we want it. Creativity helped me to achieve lots of thing. Creativity helped me to learn writing calligraphic letters, creating hand-drawn covers of magazines and posters, starting a radio station for students, writing speeches as a students representative at the University, playing roles is several theater plays, movies and musicals, giving presentations and guest lectures, inventing crowd-photographing on events, founding a service club, leading many commissions and boards. Creativity helped us raising our 3 children in a warm and joyful family. Creativity has shown me the way to a new office: literally in Ghent in 2016. And recently creativity helped me to present myself to the team, clients and peers. Let's find a creative way to use this experience to form other professionals and enjoy life.

Company culture is the embodiment of a company's personality and holds great importance for its employees, considering the significant amount of time they spend at work. In my role as an HR representative, I have the opportunity to contribute to a supportive, respectful, flexible, trustworthy, and, of course, enjoyable company culture, thereby positively impacting the satisfaction of our employees. When working for Calysta, you immediately feel that you are in a caring environment. You can feel it in the level of trust that is granted to you since your first day. This trust allows us to be flexible and to go above and beyond our client's needs. Trust is one of the most fundamental aspects of any exchange. We do our very best every day with our clients to build a trustful relationship. This hard work means that they know that they can count on us. Trust is the reason why we can leave our comfort zone and try new experiences. Without trust and a little bit of daring we would be stuck in our everyday routine.

One of the reasons why I joined Calysta is that the definition of a strategic vision is (and has always been) the cornerstone of any decision taken by its professionals, both for clients' perspectives and Calysta's perspectives. Never give any advice to a client without understanding and sharing their strategic business vision. Intellectual property (IP) will become a strategic asset for a client if and only if the client and its IP advisor are fully aligned on the business vision and the planning to achieve it. In my private life, I will never take any important decision without having a clear vision to achieve. More importantly, I need to share this vision with my potentially-impacted stakeholders (of importance ;-)) and make sure we are aligned on the vision (but the way to achieve it will remain in my hands).

Joining Calysta is a great opportunity for me to share experience, knowledge and ideas with new colleagues in a dynamic and caring team. Knowledge and experience have no value unless you use them, and especially unless you share them with others. The more you share in a team, the more you have energy and satisfaction, two positive moods that can be levered in your work to satisfy clients. Sharing is also about communicating with care to clients, understand their needs, their concerns. According to a well-known quote, don't we say that "sharing is caring"? Caring about clients is clearly one of the big pillars at Calysta. After all, life is about sharing. Our satisfaction and happiness in our life come mainly from sharing moments and things with our family & friends. I feel very blessed to share a lot with my husband, my two daughters, my family and friends. And, I do try to delight as much as possible in every little thing and every little moment that life offers, because they aren't so little.

According to Charles Darwin's theory of evolution, adaptation is crucial for species to survive in a fluctuating environment. It is also well-known that most successful companies are those able to adapt to new market trends by promoting an active innovation process. I choose to work for Calysta because it is a dynamic and fast-growing company able to react and adapt rapidly to new activities or client's expectations. During several years, I have worked as a multidisciplinary scientific researcher in the academic sector combining theoretical and experimental approaches in biology. In sciences, it is well-known that theoreticians and experimentalists are often coming from a different world. During these years, I have been able to adapt myself to find a common language to easily communicate with scientists from different disciplines. Thus, I am convinced that Calysta and myself will be able to adapt to every client's expectation to propose the best, personalized solution that will protect your intellectual property. Personally, I was lucky to meet my wife some years ago. I strongly believe that the pursuit of happiness, alone or in couple, requires to do our best to adapt to every new situation, because like John Lennon said: "life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans".

CALYSTA's structure and way of working allows for a debate in which we can exchange views and listen to each other's input. One of the reasons why I joined CALYSTA is because sharing and listening to each other's opinions and points of view on a wide variety of different topics is important to me, both personally and professionally. Listen, understand and deliver. Listening is key to have effective communication. My job as an IP attorney is to listen to the clients' requests or problems, to ask the right questions, to understand their needs and to propose solutions and give recommendations. I believe that for important life choices one must listen to their "gut" or instinct. I can argue the pros and cons of any situation (I am an attorney after all) but I am prepared to make a leap of faith and listen to my intuition.

It was exciting to start my new career adventure with Calysta, a company whose name, echoing classic mythology from my own Greek heritage, points to stars in the night sky… this name chosen for how it evokes a professional willingness to try and touch perfection. Calysta company culture and values – such as sharing, team unity, intelligence, respect, boldness, transparency, and openness – quickly made me feel an enduring bond with my new professional home here. 'Assisting each client in any type of IP challenge with efficiency & professionalism' – as well as defining Calysta's approach, this has been my client-centered attitude since my first days in this field. Flexibility is a key ingredient to achieve success, because flexibility ensures that one can sustain quality over time, even as the world quickly changes, because top professionals adapt to new needs and scenarios. With flexibility, a company can thrive decades into the future even as the world evolves in ways that were never predicted. Flexibility is the virtue that enables one to smoothly respond to a new or different situation, thus giving one a huge advantage in any business collaboration. And of course flexibility starts, by first listening to client needs and desires, enabling us to provide optimum strategy to advantage the client position. And as well as for clients, Calysta applies a wonderful flexibility internally, by listening to its employees, and always being ready to act upon suggested improvements in workplace practices or how services are provided, Calysta carefully reviewing each request, and taking action where merited. When you feel that you can, as an individual, make a difference within a firm as well as for clients, this gives you a lot of joy. In the IP field, people know that I am passionate about IP, but beyond that, I hope I have been able to show how much I wish to be a valued, uplifting colleague, with the happy respect of my peers in this superb company environment.

I am eager to gain more knowledge within the different areas of intellectual property (IP) and to be part of a group of motivated people who are all willing to team up to rise above themselves. Learning from other experts specialized in different areas than mine – something which is not often the case in traditional IP-firms – is truly enriching and allows each of us to step outside our comfort zone and push our boundaries as individuals and as a team each and every day. Calysta strives to not merely respond to the initial inquiry received with a standard answer but to offer a complete service which exceeds our client's expectations. Continuously trying to improve ourselves & our services, we aim at being innovative and to provide excelling suggestions/solutions for each individual situation. Brainlessly following the herd has never been my thing. Why be ordinary when a different approach can provide a new perspective on things or even result in something extraordinary? I believe it sure makes life much more interesting and fun when you do not stick to 'normal' all the time.

I joined Calysta because they build trust and ensure quality services. Interacting with a few members also strengthened my desire to join the company. I'd like to pass this trust on to Calysta's clients in their business life. We all know that the legal world can be difficult to apprehend; so, being able to guarantee their interests seems to me to be the least I can do. Trust is also what enables me to get on in life. Trust in those closest to me, family, partner, and friends, but also in my body when I attempt sporting challenges like a marathon. This drives me from day to day, and allows me to be calm and peaceful.
